Sangamon County Farm Bureau Over the Years
You may have just watched or heard that Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has announced an Order from the Illinois Department of Public Health for all individuals to shelter in their place of residence except for essential functions. The order has been issued in an attempt to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
So what does that mean for farmers and their daily activities?
In anticipation of this possibility, for the past several days the Illinois Farm Bureau has been in communication with Illinois Department of Agriculture acting Director Jerry Costello encouraging production agriculture to be considered an essential industry.
While we are still reviewing the final order, based on conversations with acting Director Costello, we anticipate production agriculture will be defined as an essential business. This includes ag suppliers, fuel providers, processing and distribution of ag outputs as well as other businesses that support or provide supplies necessary for farmers to operate.
We will be able to put a crop in the ground and care for our animals.
Sangamon County Farm Bureau and IFB recognizes the importance of limiting the spread of the coronavirus. At the same time, we appreciate the recognition of the vital need for farmers and agri-businesses to operate and be able to provide the food and fuel consumers depend upon.
